A good day for American justice

Zacharias Moussaoui has finally been convicted. His last words as he was led away was "America: You lost. I won,”. As he spends the rest of his life in jail, he'll have time to reflect on exactly what it was he won. The real winner of course was American justice which for too long has had its reputation soiled by Guantanamo, by Abu Ghraib, and by the use of the death penalty.

Unlike his friends in Al-Qaeda who murdered their victims in the most brutal way simply for being American, Zacharias Moussaoui received a fair trial and had a legal team provided by the American taxpayer. The US Government sought to have Moussaoui executed to compensate for its embarrassing failure to prevent 9/11, but despite everything, the jury decided to spare his life. In the end American justice triumphed.

As Gerard Baker put it, America won back something it has lost a little of in the past few years. It reminded a world that has grown a bit doubtful that the United States still represents the very highest ideals of humanity — freedom, fairness, compassion and above all, justice.

The murder suspect who was never deported

The Labour Government's record on law and order is deteriorating by the minute. The latest revelation which comes from the Times, reports that a Somali refugee wanted in connection with the murder of the policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky escaped deportation after serving a prison sentence for robbery because of Home Office policy.

Home Office sources said that his case was considered in spring last year, but a decision was taken not to deport him because
Somalia is regarded as a dangerous country to which deportations cannot be carried out safely. Mr Jama came to Britain from Somalia in 2000 and is believed to have claimed asylum and been granted leave to remain for seven years. That could have been revoked after he committed a serious crime. In the meantime, the murder suspect is believed to have fled abroad.

Why the suspect couldn't have been kept in some kind of detention centre pending deporation is beyond me. For the past nine years, Tony Blair has tried to sound tough on law and order whilst in practice doing nothing. That the rights of dangerous criminals are put before the safety of public is an insult to people's intelligence.

The Euston Manifesto

You can read about it here.

It's a great idea but unfortunately, it's also a complete waste of time, as 95% of the Left want nothing to do with it. I have to say, I agree with Daniel Finkelstein

Happy Yom Haatzmaut to all my readers!

It's Israel's 58th anniversary and there are various celebrations going on around London. Presumably, Ken Livingstone won't going to any of them, no doubt he's busy commemorating the Naqba.

Final photos from Canada

The following photos were taken at Inglis Falls, 2 hours drive North West of Toronto. Now we're back in England, were finding it difficult to get used to the lack of open space. The UK is less than one fortieth of the size of Canada but has double the population!

The entire Government deserves to be sacked for this

Over the past few months, the Labour government has drifted from one disaster to another: the failure of the NHS, the loans scandal, the John Prescott affair, they are showing all the signs of a tired and corrupt government that has been in power for far too long.

But the latest scandal is of titanic proportions. Tony Blair can play down the seriousness of the affair, but he should take note of the fact that other Governments have fallen over lesser matters. The Irish Government collapsed in 1994 over the extradition of one paedophile, but here were talking about the release of over 1000 offenders, including countless murderers, rapists and child molesters, all foreign, who were freed before their deportation papers could be considered, several of whom we know for sure have reoffended.

This is an opportunity on a plate for the Tories to bring down this Government, where an earth is David Cameron??!!!
